The LEOPARD series draws inspiration from the remarkable bronze and brass leopard sculptures associated with the historic Kingdom of Benin, in present-day Nigeria. Within the royal court of Benin, the leopard was closely associated with the Oba — the king — and became a powerful symbol of royal authority, strength, protection and controlled power.
LEOPARD V — The Golden Court Jester — introduces a more playful and enigmatic presence within the collection.
Seated upright and richly ornamented, the leopard meets the viewer with an expression that seems to hover somewhere between a roar, a grin and a challenge. There is something almost theatrical about him — commanding attention not through movement, but through sheer character.
The sculptural collar and intricate surface detailing lend the figure the ceremonial quality of a treasured object, while the warm, aged-bronze palette gives it a sense of history and patina. Yet beneath that grandeur sits a mischievous energy: the curious contradiction between dignity and irreverence that inspired the title The Golden Court Jester.
Reimagined through a contemporary artistic lens, the work explores another face of power — wit, charisma and presence. The jester, after all, has historically occupied a peculiar place close to authority: permitted to provoke, observe and reveal what others could not.
