The LEOPARD series draws inspiration from the remarkable bronze and brass leopard sculptures of the historic Kingdom of Benin, in present-day Nigeria. Within the royal court of Benin, the leopard was closely associated with the Oba — the king — and became a powerful symbol of royal authority, strength, protection and controlled power.
LEOPARD I — Bronze Guardian of the Court — introduces this history through a solitary standing leopard.
Alert and composed, the figure carries a quiet authority. Its raised tail and watchful stance suggest readiness without aggression — a guardian whose strength lies not in attack, but in presence.
The aged bronze surface gives the imagined sculpture the character of an object shaped by time. Subtle irregularities, patina and sculptural detail evoke the extraordinary metalworking traditions that inspired the collection, while the simplicity of the composition allows the leopard itself to command the space.
